DOE intends to extend the Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project contract for four months as competition for long-term contract continues.

U.S. Department of Energy intends to extend by four months its contract with the company currently operating the Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project (AMWTP) at the department’s Idaho site, so it can conduct discussions with companies competing for an anticipated six-year AMWTP contract.

These discussions will help ensure that the government receives the best offers possible on the next contract to operate the waste treatment facility. Extending the current contract also helps ensure that DOE continues to meet its transuranic waste shipping deadlines under the 1995 Idaho Settlement Agreement, as the procurement process continues for the upcoming contract.

Bechtel BWXT Idaho, LLC’s period of performance on the current contract ends September 30, 2009. DOE’s intent is to extend that contract for four months through January 31, 2010, with two (2) one-month options to extend the contract up through March 31, 2010. The anticipated dollar value of this four month extension is $44.6 million.

The contractor that DOE ultimately selects to operate the AMWTP for six years under a Cost-Plus-Award Fee contract with performance-based incentives will be responsible for waste processing and disposal of transuranic and mixed low-level waste at the Idaho site’s Transuranic Storage Area. The contractor selected will retrieve, characterize, treat (as necessary), package, and otherwise process and dispose of the remaining waste at the AMWTP. The end objective is to disposition all of the waste at an appropriate disposal facility.
